Dr. Mary Lake Polan, MD, PhD, MPH - Reproductive Endocrinologist
Dr. Polan worked and taught at Yale University School of Medicine until 1990, with intervals as a visiting professor in Iran in 1978 and China in 1986. In 1990 she moved to Stanford University School of Medicine, where she has since served as chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology and as the Katharine Dexter McCormick and Stanley McCormick Memorial Professor.
Dr. Polan has published more than 150 articles, chapters, and books in her areas of research, and in the laboratory at Stanford she focuses on reproductive endocrinology and infertility and, most recently, on gene expression patterns in uterine fibroids (benign tumors). She is a practicing clinical Reproductive Endocrinologist with a research interest in ovarian function and granulosa cell steroidogenesis. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Yale New Haven Hospital and a member of many professional societies.
She serves as an advisor or board director for many organizations, including Motif Bio Plc, ChromaVision Medical Systems Inc, OBMedical Company, The Daily Wellness Company, Arbor Vita Corporation, Metra Biosystems, Inc., Aviana Molecular Technologies, LLC, Nascent Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Progenesis Technologies LLC, NovaTract Surgical Inc, Mira Dx, Inc., Privacomp, Inc., Gynecare, Inc. Dr. Polan serves on numerous medical and health committees, including the Council of the National Institutes of Health, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) and the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Human Research Protection (SACHRP) for the Department of Health and Human Services. She has been a Member of the Board of Health Sciences Policy of the Institute of Medicine, a unit of the National Academy of Sciences, since 1992.
Dr. Nola Masterson, Ph.D
Dr. Nola Elizabeth Masterson, Ph.D. is a biotechnology industry leader and forward thinker with more than 35 years of business experience in the life sciences industry and in venture capital investment. She founded Science Futures, Inc. and serves as its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. Dr. Masterson serves as Managing Director of Science Futures Management Company, LLC and also works as an advisor, board member and investor. She is a Special advisor to Board of Directors at Nativis. She is a special advisor to several private companies and is Chair Emeritus of California Life Science Institute. She is a Consultant at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and served as General Partner at Science Futures LLC I and Science Futures LLC II since 1983 and also served as its Managing Member. She served as a Senior Business and Strategy Advisor at First Warning Systems, Inc., since September 2012 and Cyrcadia Health, Inc. since September 26, 2012. Ms. Masterson started her own venture fund in 1998. As a venture investor, she served on the Board of EpiCept Corporation and on the Board of Nanostream, Inc. She served as an Industry Advisor at TVM Capital GmbH and its Venture Partner from 2000 to 2005. She also opened the San Francisco office of TVM and became a Venture Partner. Masterson was one of the first biotech Analyst on Wall Street working for Drexel Burhnam Lambert and Merrill Lynch. Dr. Masterson worked with prominent venture funds such as Oak Investments and IVP to create companies such as IDEC, Resound, InSite Vision. She serves as the Chairman of Advisory Board of Cyrcadia Health, Inc. She served as the Chairman of Repros Therapeutics Inc. She is a Board of Advisors Member at EmbraceHer Innovations, Inc. and she serves on the Member of Global Advisory Board and Mentor at Astia, Inc.
She is an experienced global executive and board leader serving on public company, venture-backed private company and non- profit organization boards. She is a graduate of the Stanford Law School Board of Directors College course. She received a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Marymount College, an M.Sc. in Biological Sciences from George Washington University and completed Ph.D. course work in Molecular Biology at the University of Florida.
